When Janet Hoppes commented on a Facebook Live show about pet hospice this week, her heartbreaking words were felt by anyone who has ever experienced the pain of losing a beloved pet.

"I can't get over losing my dog that had lymphoma and I had to put him down at Christmas.  I can't let go. I sleep with his ashes. I'm dying inside. Help. Please," Hoppes wrote.

When Watchdog Mary, who was moderating the comments during the live interview, saw Hoppes' post she knew she had to help. And what better expert to turn to than Dani McVety, DVM, an expert in pet hospice and euthanasia, who was the guest on the show.

They told Hoppes grieving for a pet is heart wrenching. McVety mentioned there are many different ways of grieving and some people adopt another pet to honor the memory of their pet who died.

Watchdog Mary said after she lost two dogs she lasted a month without having one, and adopted a new dog.  She added that no animal will ever take the place of the pet you lost, but she found room in her heart to love another dog again just as much.

The day after the Facebook Live Hoppes sent McVety an email saying, "I found a 14-month-old Shih Tzu at a rescue today. Her name is Sapphire. I'm already in love with her. Thank you so much for all your advice. It is helping, and I saved a dog's life that the rescue pulled from the pound for me. God bless you."
